Audits

I don't know if any of you work at a place that gets audited on a regular basis. I don't mean a financial audit, I mean an audit of just about everything that the business does. The bureau of licensing was at Youth House two weeks ago and this week the Office of Community Services is here doing their audit. They check everything. Juvenile records, personnel records, menus, vehicle records, food service records, training records, etc. Then they want reports: quarterly reports, monthly reports, board of directors reports, significant incident reports, child protection reports, etc. Oh, and I can't forget that they also want to see the reports of every other agency that has been in to do their audit: state fire marshall, department of health and hospitals. They check insurance, financial records, policy manuals and on and on. It is very tiring. Every time we get audited, I lose my place to work, as they are always seated at my desk. So I just kind of wander around until I have to fetch something else they want to look at. I have a very simplistic view in reference to these audits. If Youth House has not had a valid finding of abuse or neglect, does not have a consent decree levied, has passed inspection by the fire marshall, has not had a juvenile seriously injured or die, does not have any lawsuits pending or in process, then we must be doing something right. So why do these people make it seem like we have committed a crime because a report wasn't completed on time, or we substituted broccoli for green beans? You think I am kidding, I am not.

Anyway, I am going to be very busy this week fetching things for the auditor. She seems nice enough. This is a new lady who has never been to Youth House. Pehaps she will have compassion. Perhaps, if we forgot to cross a T or dot every I, she will not focus on those, but on the big picture.

Well, gotta go. I have a list of things to have pulled before she gets here today. Have a great day.

I remember those days as a social worker! Definitely a pain, but glad they are making sure that kids are cared for correctly and that the funds that they provide are being spent judiciously. Good luck!

Thanks Lynn. Sometimes I forget exactly why these audits occur. I have to admit that some auditors are power hungry and out to show their muscle, when it should all be about the kids. They do write us up for some pretty silly things that have nothing to do with the quality of care we are providing these children. That irritates me. Your comment put it back in perspective, thanks!
