Nifty Application

Nifty= very good; fine; excellent.

Etymology of the word nifty:
1868, perhaps theatrical slang, first attested in a poem by Bret Harte, who said it was a shortened, altered form of magnificat (q.v.).

How about that? The word nifty is theatrical slang! Who'd have guessed? But I digress. You know how I like to post about all things computer. This post is no different, except for the nifty reference.

There is a nifty program available that is free to download and use. If you are concerned about software security issues, you need to try this out. It is the Secunia Personal Software Inspector. This program will scan your computer for vulnerabilites. It doesn't stop there though. Once scanned, it will list all the software installed on your computer that are potentially insecure, and if available, provides a direct link to download a "patched" version.

Just so you know, Secunia is a corporation that specializes in security threats. I copied this from their web site: Security is our business and our passion. Our mission is to work for higher levels of security. We will not keep quiet as vendor standards slip and vulnerabilities go unchecked, resulting in security threats to individuals and corporations.

Here is what Secunia detected about my system. I have one program that is insecure.

If you are interested in this program and want to give it a try, go to Secuia.com and on the left side look for "Software Inspectors" and click on Personl (PSI).
Here's a screen shot so you can see what I am talking about.

After you install it, have it scan your system. It will list all the software that has vulnerabilites and will provide a direct download link if a patch is available. Have fun, and Happy Computing!

Thanks, Cathy, for all of the computer info. I just installed the program and it's performing a scan as I type.
