Dongle

A dongle is a small hardware device that connects to a computer, often to authenticate a piece of software.

I can't help it, this post is for Steve Munz. You see, one of the words he likes to use is the word dongle. Now he doesn't use it everyday, and as a matter of fact, doesn't use it often. But when he does use it, he uses it with vigor and conviction. There are other words one can use in the place of dongle, but they are either hardware specific or vague generalizations. Dongle is much more fun to say than "thingy" or "whatchamacallit". Steve would never use whatchamacallit. It just doesn't carry the "umph" of dongle!

I encourage everyone to use the word dongle when necessary. It will make you sound educated and knowledgeable. If you feel uncomfortable using the word, talk to Steve. He will be able to expertly explain when you should or should not use the word. When you do use the word, use it with conviction.

Dongle losers and abusers beware! It is absolutely necessary that you take care of your dongles. If you lose one, or abuse one, they could be costly or impossible to replace. If you do not know the correct name of your dongle, then it will be harder to find a replacement. Imagine calling the manufacturer of your web cam or other computer hardware and requesting a replacement "thingy" that (insert description of what the dongle does here).

There are multitudes of dongles. Go to google and do an image search on the word dongle and you will see what I am talking about.

The dongle looks similar to a jump drive, but I assume it must have a completely different function.

I can't wait to let "Pete Fox" use the word "dongle" next week at rehearsals. I'm sure Steve will be most appreciative!
